Topical Authority: Why AI Search Cares Even More Than Google Did

We once worked with a specialty foods company, a boutique maker of jams, jellies, and spreads. They had been blogging for years, and on paper their focus looked tight: every post was about their products, their ingredients, their little corner of the food world. They figured the niche was specific enough that they could simply keep turning out posts and publishing them wherever they landed on the site.

When they came to us, the "before" picture was a spray-and-pray archive. Dozens of posts, each one individually reasonable, collectively adding up to nothing. There was no rhyme or reason connecting them, no structure a search engine could read as expertise. The result was brutal in its simplicity: for even the most obvious keyword in their own category, the site carried no authority. Years of publishing had not built a reputation; it had built a pile.

What topical authority actually is

Topical authority is not a count of posts. It is three properties working together:

  • Breadth. You cover the whole territory of your subject, not just the corners you enjoy writing about.
  • Depth. Each part of that territory gets real treatment, not a 300-word gesture.
  • Connectedness. The pieces reference each other in ways that show they belong to one coherent body of expertise.

A site can have forty posts and fail all three tests. Another site can have eighteen posts and pass every one, because the eighteen were chosen to cover the subject and linked to show how they fit together. The jam maker had volume. What they lacked was a topic surface: a connected, navigable body of coverage that reads as "this brand knows this subject" to anything evaluating it.

Why AI raises the stakes

Google always rewarded topical authority, but it evaluated pages somewhat independently. A single strong post could rank on its own merits even if the rest of the site was scattered.

Large language models work differently. When an AI engine decides what it knows about your brand, it synthesizes across everything you have published. It does not see your best post in isolation; it sees the whole shape of your coverage at once. And here is the uncomfortable part: thin, scattered coverage does not read as partial authority. It reads as no authority at all. A model looking for a source on "small-batch preserving techniques" wants an entity whose coverage of that subject is dense and consistent, because that consistency is the trust signal. Scattered posts give the model nothing to hold onto.

This is why the shift to AI search punishes the spray-and-pray archive so hard. The habit was always inefficient. Now it is invisible.

From a pile of posts to a topic surface

For the jam maker, the fix was not writing more. It was reorganizing what existed and filling deliberate gaps. We mapped every post against the actual territory of their subject: preserving methods, ingredients and sourcing, pairings and uses, gifting, seasonal production. Suddenly the archive had a shape you could see, including the holes. Some posts got merged. Some got rewritten to anchor a theme. New posts were commissioned only where the map showed a gap, and every piece was linked to its neighbors.

None of this was exotic. It was the same principle we laid out in SEO and GEO are not rivals: both games are won by making your authority legible to machines. Topical authority is the thing being made legible. Structure is how you write it down.

You cannot fix a shape you cannot see

The jam maker's real problem was never effort. They published for years. Their problem was that nobody could see the shape of what they had built, so every content decision was a guess.

Topic Modeler exists to end that guessing. It maps your existing coverage into a topic surface, shows you the breadth, depth, and connectedness you actually have, and makes the gaps as obvious as the strengths. Before you write the next post, find out what shape you are really in.
